The short answer: For most small Shopify stores, Omnisend is the cheaper and simpler start: Standard costs $16 a month for 500 contacts, and Pro costs $59 for 2,500 contacts with unlimited emails. Klaviyo, from $20 a month for 251 to 500 contacts, is the better pick if you will use deep segmentation, detailed flows and reporting.
That is the Omnisend vs Klaviyo answer for a store with a few hundred to a few thousand contacts. Most of the pages that rank for this comparison are written by Omnisend itself or by review sites that score each tool out of ten. This one uses only what each company publishes on its own pricing page, help pages and Shopify App Store listing, linked in the text, and tells you where each one fits. We make tinyAlbert, a third kind of option for owners who don't want to write emails; it gets one short section near the end.

Klaviyo vs Omnisend pricing for a small store
Both tools price by the size of your list, but they count it differently. Omnisend counts contacts. Klaviyo counts active profiles, meaning people you can market to; unsubscribed and suppressed contacts are not billed, according to Klaviyo's guide to its pricing. Here is what each publishes at four list sizes, with tinyAlbert alongside for reference:
| Your list | Omnisend | Klaviyo | tinyAlbert (third option) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 250 contacts | Free plan (500 emails a month) | Free plan (500 email sends a month) | $5 a month |
| 500 contacts | $16 a month on Standard (6,000 emails a month) | $20 a month on Email | $10 a month |
| 2,500 contacts | $44 a month on Standard, or $59 on Pro with unlimited emails | Shown in the calculator on Klaviyo's pricing page | $45 a month |
| 10,000 contacts | $132 a month on Standard | Shown in the calculator on Klaviyo's pricing page | $162 a month |
Omnisend's 2,500 and 10,000 Standard prices are the figures Omnisend states for its own plan in its Klaviyo alternatives guide; the $16 and $59 starting prices are on its listing. Klaviyo's $20 price for 251 to 500 contacts is on its App Store listing; for larger lists Klaviyo shows the price for your exact profile count in its calculator rather than a fixed table, so enter your own number at klaviyo.com/pricing. tinyAlbert's prices are its contact tiers, with unlimited sends and no free plan. All prices are before promotions; Omnisend offers 30% off the first three months on Standard and Pro.
What the table can't show:
- Send limits. Omnisend Standard allows 12 times your list size in emails each month; Pro is unlimited. Each Klaviyo tier includes a monthly send capacity, and both campaigns and flows use it. If you email weekly and run several automations, check the capacity before you pick a tier.
- Who you pay for. Klaviyo bills only for active profiles, so unsubscribed and suppressed contacts don't raise its bill. On Omnisend, check how your contact count is calculated before you import an old list.
- SMS. Omnisend sells SMS credits as an add-on to Pro, from $0.007 a message depending on the country. Klaviyo's listing shows an SMS plan from $15 a month for up to 1,250 SMS/MMS credits, carrier fees included.
On published prices, Omnisend is the cheaper of the two at 500 contacts, by $4 a month. At larger sizes, compare Omnisend's stated price with the figure Klaviyo's calculator gives for your own list. For more tools priced the same way, see how much email marketing costs for a Shopify store.
Free plans compared
Both free plans stop at 250 contacts and 500 emails a month. That covers two campaigns a month to a list of 250, with nothing left for automations, so treat either as a trial rather than a home.
- Omnisend Free: Omnisend's pricing FAQ says the Free plan includes all the features of its paid plans, including SMS and push notifications, with the only limits being 500 emails a month to 250 contacts. Emails and forms carry Omnisend branding until you move to Standard. Its listing promises 24/7 live support, even on Free.
- Klaviyo Free: up to 250 active profiles and 500 email sends a month, $5 of mobile messages and $5 of Composer usage a month, and email support for the first 60 days. Klaviyo's comparison page says the free plan includes multi-step flows and A/B testing. If you go over either limit, Klaviyo says sending may be paused until you upgrade.
Automations: which builds better flows?
Both cover the automations a small store needs on day one, such as a welcome series and abandoned cart or checkout recovery. Omnisend's listing highlights abandoned cart and welcome automations, and its own comparison says it has more than 30 pre-built flows, including cross-sell, follow-ups and birthdays. Klaviyo's listing gives new stores a guided setup with a signup form, a welcome email and an abandoned-checkout flow, and Klaviyo includes multi-step flows on every plan.
The difference is depth. Omnisend's own Omnisend vs Klaviyo page concedes that Klaviyo's automations are more granular, thanks to its advanced triggers, and that Klaviyo has greater depth in segmentation and reporting. Coming from the company that most wants you to choose Omnisend, that is a fair summary.
Channels differ too. According to Omnisend's comparison, Klaviyo combines email, SMS and WhatsApp in flows, while Omnisend combines email, SMS and web push notifications, with unlimited web push from Standard upwards.
Segmentation, reporting and AI
Omnisend leans on simplicity. Its listing lists AI that writes on-brand copy, a segment builder where you describe a segment and AI makes it, Forms AI that builds a popup from a description, and a connection to ChatGPT or Claude through MCP so you can create campaigns and segments from a chat. Pro adds advanced reporting, a personalised product recommender and dynamic content.
Klaviyo leans on data. Its paid Email plan lists personalised product recommendations, predictive analytics, send-time optimisation, multi-channel A/B testing and "reputation repair AI" for deliverability, plus email AI for campaign creation and AI agents for campaigns, segments and workflows. It also pulls data from 350+ integrations into the same profiles.
If you sell only on Shopify and want sensible segments without building rules, Omnisend's approach is quicker. If you want to predict who is about to buy again, or report revenue across several channels, Klaviyo gives you more to work with. Both still leave the campaign plan and the writing to you, with AI as a helper. For tools where AI does more of the work, see our list of the best AI email marketing tools for Shopify.
Support and switching between them
Support is a real difference for a small store with no marketing team. Omnisend's listing promises 24/7 email and live chat support on every plan, including Free. Klaviyo's free plan includes email support for the first 60 days, then the help centre, academy and community.
Switching is easy in one direction because Omnisend has invested in it: its comparison page says its migration team moves a store from Klaviyo in five business days, rebuilding flows by hand, on any plan. Moving the other way, Klaviyo installs from the Shopify App Store and sets up inside the Shopify admin, but you rebuild flows yourself.
Whichever way you move, don't run the same automation in two tools. Build and test the new flow, switch it on, then pause the old one the same day, and place a test order to confirm only one email arrives.
Which should a small Shopify store choose?
Choose Omnisend if
- Your list is under a few thousand contacts and you want a clear, published price at each size.
- You want email, SMS and web push from one app, with SMS paid per message.
- You value live chat support at any hour, including on the free plan.
- You want sensible automations and segments without building detailed rules.
Choose Klaviyo if
- Email and SMS are main revenue channels and someone will work on them every week.
- You want granular flows, predictive segments and A/B tests across channels.
- You use WhatsApp, or pull data from several platforms into your marketing.
- You are comfortable sizing your plan from a calculator as your list grows.
If neither fits yet, Shopify's own Shopify Messaging is free up to 10,000 emails a month on paid Shopify plans. Our Klaviyo vs Shopify Email comparison covers when that is enough, and our roundup of the best email marketing apps for Shopify sets both tools against six others.
A third option: if you don't want to write the emails
Omnisend and Klaviyo are toolkits: they give you templates, flows and AI helpers, and someone in your business still plans the calendar and writes each campaign. If that is what never gets done, tinyAlbert, our app, works differently. You choose a layout, a tone of voice (one of seven) and a language (one of ten), and describe your store. It then writes a campaign calendar mapped to your store's category and retail moments, six automations including abandoned cart and a welcome series, and four signup forms. Nothing sends until you switch it on, and you can preview, edit, regenerate or test any email first.
It costs $3 a month for up to 100 contacts after a 7-day free trial, $10 at 251 to 500 contacts and $45 at 2,001 to 2,500, with unlimited sends. It has no free plan, and it is email only today, with SMS coming soon, so if you need SMS now, Omnisend or Klaviyo fits better. See the side-by-sides in our Omnisend comparison and Klaviyo comparison, or our Shopify email marketing guide for what to set up first whichever tool you pick.
Frequently asked questions
Is Omnisend better than Klaviyo?
For a small store that wants a clear price, email plus SMS and push, and round-the-clock support, Omnisend is usually the better fit. Klaviyo is better when you will use granular flows, predictive segments and cross-channel reporting; even Omnisend's own comparison says Klaviyo goes deeper there. The right choice depends on how much time you will spend on email.
Which is cheaper, Omnisend or Klaviyo?
At 500 contacts, Omnisend Standard is $16 a month and Klaviyo's Email plan is $20, so Omnisend is $4 cheaper on published prices. Omnisend states $44 a month on Standard at 2,500 contacts and $132 at 10,000; Klaviyo shows larger-list prices in its pricing calculator, so compare it with your own profile count.
Is Klaviyo worth paying more for if you run a small store?
Only if you will use what it adds. Klaviyo's extra value is in granular flows, predictive analytics, send-time optimisation and testing. A store that runs a welcome series, cart recovery and a weekly campaign will use little of that, and Omnisend or Shopify Messaging covers the same ground for less.
Does Omnisend's free plan include SMS?
Yes. Omnisend's pricing FAQ says the Free plan includes all features of its paid plans, including SMS and push notifications. The limits are 250 contacts and 500 emails a month, and emails and forms carry Omnisend branding. On paid plans, Omnisend's pricing page sells SMS credits as an add-on to Pro, from $0.007 a message.
Can I move from Klaviyo to Omnisend, or back?
Yes. Omnisend says its migration team moves stores from Klaviyo in five business days on any plan, rebuilding flows by hand. Moving to Klaviyo, you install its Shopify app and rebuild flows yourself. Either way, switch on each new flow before pausing the old one, and test an order so no customer gets duplicate emails.
