Shopify Campaign Autopilot: what it does for email, and when to use an AI email app

What Shopify's Campaign Autopilot does for email, from Shopify's own docs: tactics, editing limits, requirements, cost, and when an AI email app fits better.

tinyAlbert team·5 min read

The short answer: Shopify Campaign Autopilot is a free AI marketing tool in your Shopify admin, launched on 17 June 2026. For email, it recommends and generates branded automations and one-time campaigns that send through Shopify Messaging, at Shopify Messaging's usual prices. Use an AI email app when you want your whole year of email planned and written in your voice.

This Shopify Campaign Autopilot review covers what it does for email, step by step, using Shopify's own Help Center pages: what it creates, what you can and cannot edit, what it needs and costs, and where a dedicated AI email app fits instead or alongside it. We also tried to set it up on our own test store.

What is Shopify Campaign Autopilot?

Campaign Autopilot lives under Growth and then Autopilot in your Shopify admin. Shopify announced it on 17 June 2026 as a way to plan and run marketing on your behalf across several channels. According to the Help Center, it uses your products, customers and sales data to recommend marketing actions across:

  • Shopify Messaging (email)
  • Shop Campaigns (customer acquisition on the Shop app and website)
  • Meta Ads (Advantage+ campaigns on Facebook and Instagram)
  • Microsoft Advertising

You connect the channels you want, set a monthly ad budget and guardrails such as target return on ad spend, regions and languages, and choose how much freedom Autopilot has. Then you review its recommendations, called tactics, and the results.

What Campaign Autopilot does for email

For email, Autopilot works through Shopify Messaging, Shopify's own email app. Shopify's email guide for Autopilot describes two kinds of email tactic:

  • Ongoing automations that trigger on customer behaviour, such as welcome flows, abandoned checkout recovery and re-engagement sends.
  • One-time campaigns for specific moments, such as a product launch or a promotional campaign.

For each tactic, Autopilot generates the email body to match the goal, applies your store's brand colours, logo and styling, and picks the customer segment it thinks is most likely to respond. The tactic then waits in Pending actions until you approve or dismiss it, unless you have allowed Autopilot to create email campaigns on its own. When you approve an automation, it is switched on; when you approve a one-time campaign, it is scheduled. Approved automations appear in Shopify Messaging, labelled as Autopilot's, alongside the ones you build yourself, and its drafts and campaigns are there too.

What you can and cannot change

Part of the emailWhat Shopify's Help Center says
Subject lineYou can ask Autopilot to regenerate it; you cannot write a custom subject line directly
Email bodyYou can edit the text; Autopilot flags that changes might affect performance
Colours and brandingYou can adjust colours and visual elements, with the same note
Target segmentYou cannot change it; Autopilot selects the segment
Send scheduleShown in the preview before you approve

This matters if you have strong views on your subject lines or who should receive which email. Autopilot is built to make those calls for you.

Requirements and cost

What your store needs

Shopify's requirements page lists these conditions:

  • A Shopify subscription plan other than the Agentic plan
  • Shopify Payments activated
  • At least one product
  • A store that is not in private mode (no storefront password)
  • Shipping set up, and refund and shipping policies in place
  • An account in good standing with Shopify
  • The Marketing staff permission for whoever sets it up
  • The Shopify Messaging app installed, for email tactics

The password rule is the one that catches new stores. When we opened Autopilot on our own password-protected test store, it began analysing the store's sales, catalogue and inventory but could not run campaigns until the password was removed, which a development store cannot do. If you are building a store before launch, plan to try Autopilot after you go live.

What it costs

Autopilot itself is free and has no fees. You pay for what it sends or spends:

What Autopilot runsWhat you pay
Autopilot itselfNothing
Email through Shopify Messaging10,000 free emails a month on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus, then $1 per 1,000; abandoned checkout emails always free
Shop CampaignsShop Campaigns pricing and your campaign settings
Meta Ads and Microsoft AdvertisingYour ad spend, billed through those platforms

Email prices are from Shopify Messaging's pricing page. One note for ads: Shopify says the monthly budget is a spend target, and Autopilot can sometimes spend above it because of delayed attribution. For what email costs at different list sizes, see how much email marketing costs for a Shopify store.

How to set up Campaign Autopilot for email

  1. Install or open Shopify Messaging and make sure your store can send from it.
  2. Go to Growth and then Autopilot in your Shopify admin.
  3. Connect your channels. If you only want email, you can leave the ad channels unconnected.
  4. Set your guardrails and budget for any ad channels you connect.
  5. Choose your permissions. In the Permissions section, decide whether Autopilot can create email campaigns on its own or needs your approval first. If you are new to it, start with approval.
  6. Check for duplicates. List the automations you already run in Shopify Messaging or another app, such as abandoned checkout. Shopify advises you to pause or edit the existing automation before approving an Autopilot tactic that targets the same behaviour, or to dismiss the tactic.
  7. Review each pending email. Look at the subject line, content, audience and send schedule, then approve or dismiss.

If an approved email does not send, Shopify's checklist is to confirm Shopify Messaging is installed and can send, that you have enough eligible subscribers for the chosen segment, and that no other automation blocks or duplicates the same trigger.

Shopify Campaign Autopilot review: strengths and limits for email

Where it is strong

  • It costs nothing to try. If you already use Shopify Messaging, Autopilot adds no fee.
  • It works from your store data. Products, customers, orders and your existing campaigns feed its recommendations, with no sync to set up.
  • Email and ads in one place. If you run Meta or Shop Campaigns as well as email, Autopilot plans them together, which an email-only app cannot do.
  • You control how much it does alone. You can require approval for every tactic, or give it more room once you trust it.

What to watch

  • Less control over the details. You cannot write your own subject line or change the target segment of an Autopilot email.
  • Recommendations arrive as tactics. You review pending actions as Autopilot suggests them. Shopify's docs do not describe a calendar view of the year's campaigns that you can see on day one.
  • Branding, not voice. The docs describe Autopilot applying your colours, logo and styling. We did not find a setting for tone of voice in the help pages we reviewed.
  • A live store is required, so pre-launch stores have to wait.
  • Your email tools stay Shopify Messaging's. Deliverability features such as inbox-recovery segments by email provider are not described in the Autopilot docs we reviewed.

None of these are faults for a store that wants a free, hands-off start. They matter if you want to plan ahead, keep a specific voice, or tune who gets what.

When to use an AI email app instead of Autopilot

An AI email app such as tinyAlbert takes a different approach: it writes your email plan up front, rather than recommending tactics as it goes. Here is how the two compare, using Shopify's docs for Autopilot and the tinyAlbert app for tinyAlbert.

Autopilot is the better fit if you send fewer than 10,000 emails a month and want to pay nothing for email, you also want ads planned in the same place, and you are happy for Shopify to choose the segments.

An AI email app fits better if you want to see your whole year of campaigns before you send one, your emails need a particular tone or language, you want to edit subject lines and audiences yourself, or you want deliverability tools such as inbox-recovery segments. See how tinyAlbert works for the setup in detail, and the Shopify Email and Autopilot comparison for the full side by side.

Can you use Autopilot and an email app together?

Yes. Shopify notes that Autopilot does not change your store settings, and it runs alongside automations you build yourself. The rule is the same as with any two email tools: only one tool should handle each job. If tinyAlbert sends your abandoned cart and welcome emails, dismiss Autopilot tactics that target the same behaviour, or pause the tinyAlbert automation if you prefer Autopilot's. One option is to let Autopilot run your ads while a dedicated app runs your email. Frequently asked questions

Is Shopify Campaign Autopilot free?

Yes. Autopilot has no fees and is available on all Shopify subscription plans except the Agentic plan. You pay for what it runs: emails follow Shopify Messaging pricing (10,000 free a month on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus, then $1 per 1,000), and ad spend on Meta, Microsoft Advertising and Shop Campaigns is billed as usual.

Does Campaign Autopilot send emails without my approval?

Only if you allow it. In the Permissions section of Growth and then Autopilot, you choose whether Autopilot can create email campaigns on its own or needs your approval first. With approval on, each email tactic waits in Pending actions until you approve or dismiss it.

Can I edit the emails Campaign Autopilot writes?

Partly. You can edit the body text and adjust colours, though Autopilot notes that changes may affect performance. You can ask it to regenerate a subject line but cannot type your own, and you cannot change the target segment. Approved emails then appear in Shopify Messaging with your other campaigns.

Does Campaign Autopilot work on a store with a password?

No. Shopify's requirements say the store cannot be in private mode, and it also needs Shopify Payments, at least one product, shipping, refund and shipping policies, and good account standing. On our password-protected test store, Autopilot analysed the store but could not run campaigns until the password was removed.

What is the difference between Campaign Autopilot and an AI email app?

Autopilot recommends email and ad tactics for you to approve, sends email through Shopify Messaging and chooses the audience itself. An AI email app such as tinyAlbert writes a calendar of campaigns and your core automations up front, in a tone and language you pick, with segments and deliverability tools you control.
